Family-friendly, School Holiday activities in Henderson

Family-friendly, School Holiday activities in Henderson.

It’s that time again – the school holidays are fast approaching and with that, it often means finding two weeks worth of activities to keep the kids entertained.

COVID-19 may’ve meant goodbye to this year’s Fijian getaway or Australian pit-stop but you needn’t stray as far, as Henderson boasts a whole range of activities the family can get stuck into.

Taking it upon ourselves, we’ve compiled a list of five family-friendly activities that you can use to entertain the kids throughout the school holidays and never fear hearing the words ‘I’m bored’.

Explore your own backyard

After being stuck inside for so long,  there’s never been a better time to explore the West Coast. Whether you just want a day away or a week retreat, there are plenty of incredible places dotted along the coast. Consider getting the family into their hiking boots and explore the Waitakere walking tracks, or extend your stay at one of the many local beach-stay accommodations.

Discover the tastes of Japan; no flights needed.

Renowned as a culinary melting pot, the Auckland Night Markets has proved itself proficient in the art of international flavours. Becoming a permanent fixture at The Boundary on Thursday evenings, the menu consists of worldly cuisine that will take your taste-buds on a culinary tour unlike anything else the city has to offer. Captain Crepes journey us along the cobbled streets of France, whilst the Gua Bao and Bubble Tea of Kai Eatery welcome us to the bustle and hustle of inner-city Taiwan.

A West Auckland Weekender

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘West does it best’, and staying true to such an accolade is Muriwai’s Gannet Colony. We reckon you’d be hard pressed to find a more breathtaking view which comes occupied by thousands of gannets who annually nest August through March. This bird sanctuary is easily accessible and you can get relatively close to the birds which makes the experience particularly unique.

Worth their weight in napkins

Home to a good handful of strawberry fields, it would seem West Aucklanders have a shared passion for all things sweet. Proving itself a crowd favourite is Phil Greig Strawberry Garden, where you and the family spend the day exploring the farm and finding the yummiest strawberries to pick. Not to mention, afterwards you treat everyone to a real fruit ice cream and yogurt, gelato or smoothie!

Take to the treetops

If adventure and action is more of the family’s thing, then Woodhill Forest is your playground. Whether it’s time dust off the bikes, get stuck into a bit of paintball, or race the ropes amongst the treetops, Woodhill Forest has it all.

With bike track day passes available for just $10 for adults and $5 for children, it’s affordable fun. Better yet, you could pack a light lunch and make a day of it; some of the views along the tracks deserve to be the setting of an idyllic picnic.
